Undoubtedly, you are aware that on August 21, 2017 a total solar eclipse will be visible over St. Louis. Did you know this is the first time a total eclipse has occurred in our area since before Columbus arrived in the New World? This is truly a “once-in-a-lifetime” event!
Research done by Dr. Christian Smith of the University of Notre Dame has found that today’s young people mistakenly see faith and science as incompatible. This eclipse is a perfect time to point out that the Church has been, and continues to be, very supportive of the sciences. Below is one example of a helpful resource:
I urge you to prepare your family for this unique opportunity and the risks of not viewing it safely. Rest assured that St. Francis Borgia is working diligently to plan the learning activities that will enhance this awesome event! Special attention is being devoted to safety! Specific details, including parish involvement and T-Shirt order forms will be shared as the event draws nearer. The teachers and I will work collaboratively to finalize these plans during our faculty in-service day! This natural wonder is an opportunity for students to deepen their interest in the sciences and their awe of the Creator of the Universe.
