Tradition and Technology

Meet at SFBGS!

Technological advancements have taken our tradition of excellence to a higher level.

 Find out how below.

How technology serves the greater good

The architect behind an array of state-of-the-art security technology deployed at St. Francis Borgia Grade School says the school is on the cutting edge of student safety protocols.

“I do IT (information technology) for four other schools, and I am on a committee for all of the independent schools in Missouri. No one has any of this, at least not to this degree,” Lou Filla said.

Filla, CEO at Lumicon, Inc., a Washington-based computer consulting firm that is assisting the school with implementation of the technology, said Borgia is utilizing a camera system with facial recognition capabilities, a controlled access system on exterior and interior doors, license plate readers and various audio detection technology that can trigger warnings if glass is broken or a fire alarm goes off to help keep students safe.

The school is the first in Washington to be able to send hundreds of live, real-time feeds to Washington’s police dispatch system.

“Their camera system and our camera system are exactly the same, so the integration of the two is pretty seamless,” Filla said. “It’s all part of what I call a security ecosystem that is tied in with the Washington Police Department.”

The school is also in the process of installing safety film on glass windows on the first floor of the school and is in the final stages implementing a program called “Crisis Go” that when triggered, will automatically send alerts to the police and fire departments in the event of an active killer situation. The safety protocol also involves having “safe” areas near the school to take an active count of all students if they are to flee the grounds.

Filla, a graduate of Borgia Grade School, said that the Crisis Go program being implemented along with future school security improvements will incorporate artificial intelligence technology on the camera system that can sense stress levels on people’s faces to prevent them from entering the building.

Filla said the drive for security upgrades at the school began in 2021, when the school applied for and received a $100,000 federal grant for safety measures.
